ZOYSIA
Zoysia is a genus of creeping grasses widespread across much of Asia and Australia + found in coastal areas or grasslands.
TURF TYPES
- Palisades: medium-coarse textured grass with excellent resistance to drought + damage
-
Zorro: more exotic looking fine-bladed and very drought tolerant grass that is durable + stays green for the longest duration during the year
PLANT DETAILS
- Cultivation season: year-round
- Light: full sun, part sun
-
Ecological condition: creekside, sunny edge, prairie pocket
DESIGN SUPPORT
These grasses can be “tex-ified,” which means trained to be very drought tolerant through reduced irrigation. This technique also reduces the “crop” production (soft green grass blades), which means less mowing + edging.
Without this drought-tolerance training, zoysia thrives in the sunny edge condition with ample irrigation. While more water will lead to more service requirements + water costs, well-irrigated zoysia will yield outstanding recovery from injury + superior softness. This is often the right choice where zoysia will be used for frequent sporty activities (frisbees, active pets, or assorted soirees).
